A professional film restoration is a highly structured, multi-month project requiring meticulous planning and interdisciplinary collaboration.

Phase 1: Research, Sourcing, and Inspection

The project begins with exhaustive research to locate all surviving film elements globally. Curators inspect each reel, measuring shrinkage, checking for vinegar syndrome, and choosing the absolute best source elements (ideally the original camera negative).

Phase 2: Scanning, Restoration, and Mastering

The selected elements are cleaned, physically repaired, and scanned (often with wet gates). Digital artists then correct color fading, stabilize jitter, and repair physical scratches. Finally, a Digital Cinema Package (DCP) is mastered for theatrical and home exhibition.
