Super 16
Core Term Definition
A variation of the 16mm gauge that utilizes single-perforated film to expand the image area into a widescreen ratio.
Technical Analysis & Context
Introduced in 1969 by Swedish cinematographer Rune Ericson, Super 16mm eliminates the sprocket holes and soundtrack space on one edge of standard 16mm film. This expands the usable frame area by 40%, yielding a modern 1.66:1 aspect ratio that is highly suited for blow-ups to 35mm or widescreen digital mastering.
