Millions of feet of historical record are locked inside family closets on 8mm, Super 8, and 16mm home movies. Preserving these memories requires careful handling.

Identifying the Gauge and Condition

The first step is identifying the film stock. Standard 8mm, Super 8, and 16mm have distinct perforation layouts. Next, evaluate the condition: Is there a vinegar smell indicating chemical rot? Is the film brittle or covered in mold?

Safe Cleaning and Digitization

Amateur film should never be run through dirty home projectors, which can tear brittle splices. It should be cleaned with a lint-free microfiber cloth moistened with an approved film cleaner and scanned on a continuous, sprocketless digital scanner.
