Optical printing where both projector and camera stop and register each frame individually during exposure.

In step printing, both the source reel and destination stock are advanced frame-by-frame and held perfectly stationary during exposure by registration pins. This ensures maximum image stability and allows the color timer to change exposure settings for individual frames.
