16mm Film Gauge
Core Term Definition
A narrower safety film gauge introduced in 1923 for amateur use, later widely adopted by news and documentarians.
Technical Analysis & Context
Launched by Eastman Kodak as a non-flammable alternative to 35mm nitrate, 16mm film was adopted by schools, industrial filmmakers, news stations, and independent directors. It is cheaper to shoot, transport, and preserve, though its smaller frame area results in a more prominent and textured film grain structure.
