Log vs. Linear Color Encoding
Core Term Definition
The mathematical curves used to map exposure values from physical film to digital image files.
Technical Analysis & Context
Linear encoding assigns values proportionally to light intensity. Logarithmic (Log) encoding maps values on a curved scale that mimics the logarithmic way human eyes and photographic film respond to light. Log encoding allows scanners to capture the entire dynamic range of film highlights and shadows in compact file formats.
