35mm Film Gauge
Core Term Definition
The globally dominant professional motion picture gauge, measuring 35mm in width with sprocket holes on both sides.
Technical Analysis & Context
Standardized by Thomas Edison and George Eastman in the 1890s, 35mm has been the workhorse of cinema history. It traditionally features four perforations per frame on both edges, running vertically. Its wide surface area provides superb image resolution, making it the standard against which other formats are measured.
