Magnetic Soundtrack
Core Term Definition
Audio recorded onto strips of magnetic iron oxide bonded directly onto physical film positive stocks.
Technical Analysis & Context
Popularized in the 1950s for stereophonic theatrical standards, magnetic soundtrack film features thin stripes of magnetic tape laminated along the film edges. This allowed multiple high-fidelity audio tracks (such as stereo surround), though the magnetic oxide is prone to flaking and decay.
