Polyester Base Film
Core Term Definition
An exceptionally durable and chemically stable synthetic polymer film base used for modern archival duplication.
Technical Analysis & Context
Introduced under trade names like Estar in the mid-1950s, polyester film is the modern gold standard for physical preservation. It is virtually tear-proof, chemically inert, and does not suffer from vinegar syndrome. It is used almost exclusively for making new archival preservation intermediate elements.
