Dry Gate Printing
Core Term Definition
Conventional film scanning or printing without the use of an index-matching fluid interface.
Technical Analysis & Context
In dry gate scanning, the film travels through the aperture surrounded by air. While simpler and faster to set up, dry gate scanning captures every surface scratch, hairline fracture, and physical blemish on both the base and emulsion layers, requiring extensive digital post-processing to clean.
